Amidst Celebrations, Faust Warns of Grave Repercussions of Sequestration

Addressing thousands of new graduates and their supporters in Tercentenary Theatre, University President Drew G. Faust argued Thursday afternoon that research spending cuts stemming from sequestration threaten Harvard’s ability to mount an effective intellectual response to crises like those experienced this year.

Having responded to the financial crisis and other tests in her first six years in office, University President Drew G. Faust leads Harvard into an ambitious capital campaign with the familiar vision of "One University."

Faust Looks Forward

While Faust's responsive leadership style has worked during tumultuous times for both the University and the world, it remains to be seen whether she can use her renowned communication skills to renew and refine inherited ideas and lead Harvard through an ambitious, 21st-century capital campaign.

After the annual ceremony, set to be held in Tercentenary Theatre, was canceled due to rain, a packed crowd headed to Boylston Hall to congratulate the newly commissioned military officers of the Class of 2013.

In January 2014 Menino will step down from the Boston mayorship, a post he has held since 1993. The city’s longest-serving mayor, Menino has collaborated with Harvard through four serving presidents, land purchases in Allston, and the rise of online education.

At 362nd Commencement, 7,321 Are Awarded Degrees

A total of 1,651 Harvard College seniors became graduates Thursday morning as University President Drew G. Faust conferred degrees on the Class of 2013 at the University’s 362nd Commencement exercises in Tercentenary Theatre.
