Police on SWAT Team, "New Racism," and Duke Sex Scandal
After the police raid of a Yale undergraduate party last week at a New Haven nightclub, students attended a press conference this past Tuesday to respond to the police raid. Even though the police department has defended its actions, New Haven’s mayor, John DeStefano Jr. said in an interview with the New York Times that the presence of officers in riot gear and SWAT team was “excessive and inappropriate” and “should not have been part” of the inspection.”

Early Saturday morning, about a dozen New Haven police officers stormed into a downtown New Haven nightclub where Yale’s Morse-Ezra Stiles College “screw” was held. Five students were arrested, and one sophomore was apparently Tasered.
MIT's Russian Agreement and Other News
For one, Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd has sided with the Peruvian government in the battle over the Incan artifacts housed in Yale’s Peabody Museum, according to the Yale Daily News. Apparently, Dodd has just recently returned from a trip to South America, where he met with various officials in the Peruvian government—including President Alan Garcia. After these meetings, he urged the university to return the artifacts to Peru. Hiram Bingham, a Yalie, had discovered the artifacts (which include art and human remains) at Machu Picchu in 1911.

At Yale, a postdoctoral fellow Vajinder P. S. Toor was shot and killed outside his Branford, Conn. home on Monday morning. According to The Yale Daily News, Branford police have arrested Lishan Wang, a Chinese national from Beijing, who was arraigned in New Haven Superior Court on Tuesday. Officials said they believe there was a connection between the alleged murderer and the victim from a previous employment situation unrelated to Yale.
