Kyle Juszczyk ’13, a nine-time Pro Bowl fullback and former Harvard standout, is staying in the Bay Area.
After being released by the San Francisco 49ers last week, Juszczyk has re-signed with the team on a two-year, $8 million deal, securing his place as he enters the later stages of his NFL career at the age of 33.
According to ESPN, Juszczyk turned down a more lucrative offer from the Pittsburgh Steelers in favor of remaining with the 49ers, with whom he has spent the last eight seasons.
An Ohio native, Juszczyk began his football journey at Harvard as a tight end under coach Tim Murphy. During his time in Cambridge, Juszczyk was a dominant force for the Crimson.
In his senior season, he led the team with 52 receptions for 706 yards and eight touchdowns, demonstrating his prowess as a receiving tight end. The season prior, he led all Ivy League tight ends with 37 receptions.
His standout career at Harvard paved the way for his selection in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. Juszczyk was the first Harvard player to be drafted to the NFL since Ryan Fitzpatrick ’05.
Juszczyk continued to make Harvard history in the NFL, becoming the first former Crimson player to catch an NFL touchdown since 1980 in his second season with the Ravens.
After spending four seasons in Baltimore, Juszczyk signed a four-year, $21 million contract — the largest contract for a fullback in NFL history — with the 49ers in 2017 where he quickly became a key component of new head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
Beyond the traditional fullback duties, he frequently contributed as a lead blocker, pass-catcher, and situational ball-carrier. Shanahan once described Juszczyk’s role as an “offensive weapon.”
While playing for Baltimore and San Francisco, Juszczyk was named to nine consecutive Pro Bowls. His tenure with the 49ers also included two trips to the Super Bowl. In Super Bowl LIV against the Kansas City Chiefs, Juszczyk became the first Harvard alumnus to score a touchdown in a Super Bowl.
Juszczyk is one of five former Crimson players currently in the NFL.
