Apartment Building Fire Displaces 25 Residents, No Injuries Reported

By Elyse C. Goncalves

The Cambridge Fire Department responded to a three-alarm fire on Broadway St. that forced out more than two dozen residents and temporarily displaced an elementary school on Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called in at 11:33 a.m. Thursday to a fire at 368-370 Broadway, a three-story, mixed-use building in Cambridge. According to acting fire chief Thomas F. Cahill, CFD extinguished the fire at 1 p.m. that afternoon.

While the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, Cahill said it is believed to be an electrical fire.

Approximately 25 residents were evacuated from the building, which sits across from the public Tobin Montessori School. Residents reported no injuries, but one firefighter suffered a broken hand, Cahill said.

Students at Tobin were temporarily moved to Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Cambridge Public Schools spokesperson Jaclyn Piques confirmed in an email. CRLS sits several blocks down Broadway St.

All Tobin staff and students were moved as a precaution Thursday afternoon and after school activities were cancelled. School operations have returned to normal as of Friday morning, according to Piques.
