BRIEF: Track and Field Sees Records Fall at the BU Season Opener

By Julio Fierro, Crimson Staff Writer

Select members of the Harvard men’s and women’s track and field teams opened up their season this weekend as the Crimson made the short journey to crosstown rival Boston University to participate in the BU Season Opener.

Six athletes combined to take home seven events, led by senior Autumne Franklin’s pair of triumphs. The Owings Mills, Md., native clocked in at a Harvard-record 38.72 seconds in the 300 meter dash, while junior Jade Miller was close behind her at 38.84, the second-best time in the school record books.

Franklin also took home the 60 meter hurdles title with a time of 8.72 seconds.

Rookie Gabrielle Thomas started off her collegiate career with a bang, winning the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.56 seconds, with classmate Ngozi Musa behind her at 7.70 seconds. The two freshmen times were good enough to place them in the top-10 in the Crimson record books.

On the men’s side, junior Thomas Negron claimed the 1000 meter title, clocking in with a time of 2:31.93. Senior Robert Hogg, meanwhile, claimed the one mile run, finishing with a time of 4:25.94, just under five seconds faster than the second place finisher.

Outside the track, sophomore Marlee Sabatino set an indoor personal best and Harvard all-time fourth-best mark in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12 feet and 3.75 inches to take home the title.

On the men’s side of the field, senior Spencer Lemons’ mark of six feet and six inches claimed him the goal in the high jump, two inches higher than the second place mark shared by three different competitors.

With its first meet of the season under its belt, the Crimson now take a month off of competing before retuning to compete at Cornell on January 8.
