Ice-cream shop J.P. Licks will open a store in Harvard Square this summer, a company official said Friday evening.
J.P. Licks Supervisor Daniel W. Kaeding said that the Boston-area chain would bring its popular ice cream and frozen yogurt to a location in Cambridge this summer. (The closest store is currently in Somerville's Davis Square, near Tufts.)
Founded in 1981, J.P. Licks now has seven locations in and around Boston. The site it will take over is owned by Harvard and was most recently occupied by Toscanini's.
J.P. Licks will join an already crowded ice cream and frozen yogurt market in the Square, which includes Lizzy's, Herrell's, Baskin-Robbins, Ben & Jerry's, and Berryline.
