The smoke billows out between two columns and a silhouetted figure is seen holding a keytar. Then the camera turns to a rotating disco ball. You think to yourself, “Have I tuned on VH1 classics?” The fear quickly intensifies seconds later when you realize you’re not watching a Bee Gees video, but rather the new clip for Snoop Dogg’s “Sensual Seduction.”
Snoop references a ton of 1970s fads throughout the video. He rocks every hairstyle imaginable, from a mullet to an Afro with long sideburns. In an homage to Travolta circa “Saturday Night Fever,” he dons suits of various metallic hues and makes sure his enormous collars extend beyond his jacket’s lapels. Of course, Snoop doesn’t forget the large glasses. The video stays authentic throughout, and while the women are scantily-clad, Snoop makes sure their shreds of clothing are all vintage.
Unequivocally the best part of the video is when Snoop Dogg takes his seduction into space. On a circular bed flying through the galaxy, Snoop croons to one of the objects of his affection.
Being off by a few decades is not the video’s only advantage. Instead of rapping, Snoop sings through a talkbox and ends up sounding a bit like Akon.
It can only be assumed that Snoop Dogg began his obsession with the ’70s after his Oscar-worthy turn as Huggy Bear in the 2004 classic “Starsky and Hutch.” Regardless of its origins, “Sensual Seduction” is a silly and hilarious video that makes me nostalgic for a decade I never even lived in.
