ECAC ROUNDUP: Cornell Surges To Top Quinnipiac

ITHACA, N.Y.—Mark McCutcheon scored with 22 seconds left to lift Cornell to a 2-1 victory over Quinnipiac Saturday night.

Goalie David McKee made 23 saves as the Big Red (8-3-1, 5-2-1 ECAC) scored twice in the third period to overcome a 1-0 deficit. Matt Moulson’s goal tied the game.

After a scoreless first period, Mark Van Vliet put the Bobcats (9-9-0, 3-7-0) ahead with a goal at 6:09 of the second period.

Goalie Bud Fisher stopped 22 shots for the Bobcats, who lost for the seventh time in eight games.

PROVIDENCE 5, BROWN 1

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Providence put 48 shots on goal in a 5-1 victory over Brown to capture the Mayor’s Cup trophy on Saturday night.

Colin McDonald scored twice and added an assist for Providence (8-6-1, 7-2-1 Hockey East). Tony Zancanaro added a goal and an assist for the Friars.

Brown (2-7-1, 2-5-0 ECAC) took the early lead when Pete LeCain scored at 3:17 of the first period.

Torry Gajda’s power-play goal tied the score at 15:25 of the first period. McDonald scored 49 seconds later.

Zancanaro and Nick Mazzolini scored in the second period, and McDonald finished off the scoring early in the third.

BU 6, BC 2

BOSTON—Boston University scored four unanswered goals in the third period in a 6-2 victory over Boston College.

Kenny Roche scored twice while John Laliberte and Brad Zancanaro both had a goal and two assists for the Terriers (5-6-2, 4-4-1 Hockey East), who avenged a 2-1 loss to the Eagles (7-4-1, 6-2-1) on Friday.

BU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Roche and Laliberte. BC pulled even on goals by Benn Ferriero and Dan Bertram.

Zancanaro’s goal with eight minutes to play was the game winner. Jason Lawrence scored three minutes later, followed by Roche’s second goal of the night, and Eric Thomassian’s goal in the final minute.

John Curry made 31 saves for the Terriers.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 4, ST. LAWRENCE 3

CANTON, N.Y.—A goal by defenseman Joe Charlebois with less than three minutes to play gave New Hampshire a 4-3 win over St. Lawrence on Saturday night.

St. Lawrence unsuccessfully contested the goal, saying the puck was hit with a high stick before bouncing off the crossbar, hitting Justin Pesony in the back and falling into the net.

The Saints (11-5-0, 6-2-0 ECAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Mike Madill and T.J. Trevelyan.

The Wildcats (8-5-3, 6-3-2 Hockey East) responded with three second-period goals from Daniel Winnik, Brett Hemingway, and Jacob Mcflikier.

St. Lawrence’s Kevin DeVergilio scored 13 seconds into the third period to make it 3-3.

Jeff Pietrasiak had 38 saves for the Wildcats, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Pesony finished with 32 saves.

YALE 5, BROWN 2

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Jean-Francois Boucher scored two goals, including the game winner, as Yale pulled away in the third period for a 5-2 win over Brown on Friday night.

Bill LeClerc had a power-play goal and two assists and Jeff Hristovski had a pair of assists for the Bulldogs (2-8-0, 1-6-0 ECAC), who won their first conference game of the season.

The game was tied 2-2 after two periods. But Boucher’s power-play goal at 10:21 of the third gave Yale the lead for good. He added an empty net goal in the final minute.

Jeff Prough had a goal and an assist for the Bears (2-6-1, 2-5-0).

ST. LAWRENCE 4, MASS-LOWELL 2

CANTON, N.Y.—T.J. Trevelyan scored two goals and Justin Pesony made 29 saves as St. Lawrence rallied to beat the University of Massachusetts-Lowell 4-2 in men’s college hockey Friday night.

Danny O’Brien jammed home a rebound at 7:38 of the first period, and the River Hawks (4-8-0) went up 2-0 on a power play at 18:21 when Mark Roebothan tipped in a shot.

Trevelyan scored off a rebound during a power play for the Saints (12-4-0) midway through the second period. Kyle Rank tied the score with a blast into the upper corner of the net 1:31 into the third period.

Brock McBride tipped in a shot past River Hawk goalie Peter Vetri for the game-winner at 12:52. Trevelyan scored into an empty net with 39 seconds to play.

Vetri made 40 saves.
