To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
Through the columns of the CRIMSON I should like to bring to attention of Harvard students, who are interested in military affairs, the excellent opportunity which is open to them to join Massachusetts Corps of Coast Artillery. The artillery is regarded by many Harvard men may be found in the organization.
The Corps goes into camp annually in July, for one week, at some fort near Boston. Practice- is given in serving, aiming, and firing seacoast guns of latest model.
Drills are held weekly at the armory on Irvington street, Boston, except in August and September, and instruction is given in infantry as well as in the artillery tactics, the manual of arms, the use of the magazine rifle and revolver, and the setting-up drill as practiced in the regular army. During the spring summer and fall there are facilities for target shooting at the range with small arms.
After a decade of active service, I am sincerely of the opinion that one receives fundamental benefits, and renders a public service by devoting some time at least to training. I would most heartily encourage and urge all who can spare time to enlist for at least one term of military service. ALBERT A. GLEASON '86.
