Harvard To Give 6,349 Degrees

University President Lawrence H. Summers will award 6,349 degrees to graduates of the College and the graduate schools today at Harvard’s 352nd Commencement exercises.

Ernesto Zedillo, former president of Mexico, will deliver the keynote address. Zedillo, who who is credited with leading Mexico towards democratization, is currently a professor of international economics and politics at Yale University and is director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization.

The National Weather Service has forecast a 60 percent chance of rain for tomorrow afternoon. Last year, driving rain put dampers on the ceremony.

The College will confer 1,586 degrees: 1582 bachelor of arts (A.B.) degrees and four bachelor of science (S.B.) degrees, according to the Harvard News Office.

Of the graduating seniors, 854 are men and 728 are women.

Sixty-three of the candidates earned their diplomas summa cum laude in their field of concentration, 54 magna cum laude with highest honors and 430 magna cum laude in their field of concentration. Four hundred fourteen earned cum laude (formerly known as cum laude in general studies), 476 cum laude in their field of concentration, and 145, slightly more than 9 percent of the class, received non-honors degrees.

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences will award a total of 821 degrees. Of those, 364 are Master of Arts, 58 Master of Science, 398 Doctor of Philosophy and one Master of Engineering.

Eight hundred eighty-two candidates at the Graduate School Of Business will be awarded Master of Business Administration degrees and two will receive Doctor of Business Administration degrees.

The medical school will bestow 165 Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees and 24 Master in Medical Sciences (M.M.Sc.) degrees.

Six hundred ninety-eight candidates will receive degrees from Harvard Law School—569 Doctor of Law (J.D.), 118 Master of Law (L.L.M.) and 11 Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.).

In Radcliffe Yard, the Graduate School of Education will confer 652 degrees—589 Master of Education (Ed.M.), 59 Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and four certificates of advanced studies.

Five hundred thirty-six candidates of the John F. Kennedy School of Government will receive degrees. Of those, 289 will be Master in Public Administration (M.P.A.), 160 Master in Public Policy (M.P.P), 75 M.P.A. with concentration in International Development, and seven Master in Public Policy and Urban Planning (M.P.P./U.P.).

The divinity school will confer 83 Master of Theological Studies degrees (M.T.S.), 51 Master of Divinity (M.Div.), seven Master of Theology (Th.M.), and three Doctor of Theology (Th.D.).

The dental school will award a total of 93 degrees, including 36 Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) and 39 specialty certificates.

Two hundred eighteen candidates of the Graduate School of Design will receive diplomas: 91 Master in Architecture (M.Arc.), 52 Master in Design Studies (M.D.S.), 28 Master in Landscape Architecture (M.L.A.), 21 Master of Architecture in Urban Design (M.A.U.D.), 15 Master in Urban Planning (M.U.P.), 8 Doctor of Design (D.D.) and three Master of Landscape Architecture in Urban Design degrees.

The school of public health will award 356 degrees, including 176 Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) and 143 Master of Science (M.S.).

Four hundred sixty-two candidates of the University Extension school will also be awarded diplomas.
