The Harvard Crimson won eight Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists this weekend—more than any other newspaper in the region.
The Mark of Excellence Awards have been given annually since 1972 to honor the best in college journalism.
The Crimson won second place in both the best daily newspaper category and the best online newspaper category. Fifteen Minutes, The Crimson’s weekly magazine, took second place for best student magazine.
Former Associate Magazine Editor Angie C. Marek ’02-’03 and President Amit R. Paley ’04 earned first place in the newspaper feature writing category for “The Story of Randy and Suzanne,” a profile of the two Harvard students who embezzled almost $100,000 from the Hasty Pudding Theatricals.
Two Crimson columnists took top honors in the newspaper general column category. Jonathan P. Abel ’05 won first place for his column “The Worldfront” and Arianne R. Cohen ’03 won second place for “Daily Encounters.”
Paley also won second place in the newspaper in-depth reporting category for “The Secret Court of 1920,” which revealed that Harvard persecuted and expelled gay students from the University in 1920.
Jessica E. Schumer ’06 won second place in the spot news photography category for “Giuliani rallies for Romney in Boston.”
The awards ceremony took place this weekend in Port Jefferson, New York at the Society of Professional Journalists conference for the region covering New England, New York, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvanian.
