On Saturday, the Harvard Rugby Football Club defeated Northeastern 31-29 in a dramatic come-from-behind victory to win the Beanpot tournament.
Harvard crushed Boston University in the first round.
Sophomore wing Pete Danner had two tries on the day, including the go-ahead score in the waning moments of the championship game.
The Crimson fell behind early, allowing three tries in the first five minutes to trail 17-0. After a disappointing first half, Harvard came out in the second stanza with renewed intensity.
Junior lock and team president Ben Davis scored his first try of the season at the right time, as the Crimson surged ahead of the defending champion Terriers.
"It was demoralizing to trail so soon," said Davis. "But we came back strong in the second half, and played great defense."
The Crimson had an easy time in the first round, dismantling BU in convincing fashion. Danner scored in that game as well, as the Crimson dominated possession of the ball.
Six Harvard players were named to the 15-man All-Tournament team.
"This is our biggest tournament of the spring," said Davis. "These are teams we play a lot, and it gives us bragging rights."
The rugby women would not be outdone, as the Radcliffe Rugby Football Club also took the Beanpot title on Saturday.
Radcliffe's contests were not as dramatic as Harvard's. The women shut out Stonehill in the first round. Radcliffe then defeated Boston University 34-5 to secure the trophy.
Three-time All-America selection Kelly Seary led Radcliffe's attack. The senior flyhalf scored three tries against Stonehill, and twice against the Terriers.
Radcliffe repeated as champions for the third time with the victory. Radcliffe has taken the title every year that the tournament has been played.
