The Harvard Independent announced its 2001-2002 Executive Board yesterday, naming Andrew E. Carlson ’03 as president, Matthew G. Yglesias ’03 as editor-in-chief, Garrett J. Grolemund ’03 as publisher, Alicia C. Llosa ’03 and David Montes ’03 as executive editors. Olivia Y. Hung ’03 will assume the position of senior manager and Cody R. Corliss ’03 will be the director of development.
Carlson said he hopes the Independent can make the transition from weekly newspaper to news magazine under his tenure next year.
“I’m really excited about the direction the Independent can go this year. I think we have a high quality paper and I can see our organization really going into a period of expansion and even higher quality. Recently, we’ve been undergoing a conversion from a weekly newspaper to a weekly news magazine and as president I like to direct the completion of this movement,” Carlson said.
He said the move to the news magazine format will allow more thorough news coverage and that the purpose of the Independent is to “provide weekly in- depth coverage that isn’t matched anywhere on campus.”
Carlson said he believes the general responsibility of president is to set the direction of the publication and maintain its spirit, while the editor-in-chief should direct weekly content.
The positions of the Executive Board deal with different aspects of the publication.
The editor-in-chief and executive editors decide the direction and content while the publisher manages the visual side of the paper, the photography and design. The senior manager organizes “the comp,” the process to join the publication and also has design-input. The director of development handles alumni communication and sending out subscriptions.
The application process for the Executive Board and other editorships began last month. Senior staff members, those who previously held positions reviewed applications and interviewed prospective editors.
“After the whole interview process I felt really confident about their hold on what issues need to be addressed and I think they are going to make more substantive strides with regard to content,” said former Publisher Srinivas Ayyagari ’02.
“They have the motivation and the idea base to [move to a news magazine format] and I feel like they are going to accomplish quite a bit.”
Though outgoing officers will be around to answer questions during the changeover period, Ayyagari said, “By next week it will be their baby.”
