Sailing Takes Two Thirds

Harvard co-ed and women's sailing teams both breezed to third place finishes this weekend.

The co-ed team, which participated in the Truxton Umsted Regatta at Navy, had 505 points, behind only Hobart and William Smith (414) and Tufts (471).

A high point for the Crimson, however, was its performance in the A and B divisions. In A, seniors Peter Strothman and Becky Rosen finished first with 94 points, edging the team from the University of Southern California by three points. There was a sizable gap after the first two, with the third-place team at 126 points.

In B, junior Christian Taubman and senior Brian Fox finished second with 104 points, 11 points behind the St. Mary's crew.

In C division, Harvard freshman Sean Doyle finished fifth with 126 points, although a Navy sailor also had 126 points. A Tufts sailor won with 89 points.

And in D division, Harvard junior Jason Carroll took ninth place with 181 points, 123 points behind the winner from Hobart.

Each division held 18 races, and the point totals for the four divisions were added to determine the Regatta winner. The 123-point difference in the D division was costly for the Crimson, because it lost by 91 points.

The women's team finished third at St. Mary's Women's Intersectional with 134 points, behind first-place Dartmouth (120) and Boston University (128). The competition consisted of 12 races for both the A and B divisions, and results were added to determine the final score.

Harvard got off to a slow start, trailing Dartmouth 16-3 after the first race. The Crimson stayed close for the remainder of the day, thanks in part to the third and tenth races.

In the third race, the A division boat of freshmen Margaret Gill and Susan Bonney finished second and the B division crew of senior Courtney Ermler and junior Sarah Levin was first. In the tenth race, both crews finished first.

With 64 points, Harvard's A team tied for second with Connecticut College's A team. Dartmouth won at 58 points.

Harvard's 70-point B team performance placed it fifth behind Dartmouth, B.U., Tufts, and William Smith.
