Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
To the editors:
I have recently been subjected to much Crimson banter about the dearth of social activites on campus, a void final clubs help fill. These crusaders believe the University should provide arenas for social interaction, and that the final clubs are social outlets leagues beyond those the College provides.
I assert that I don't need anyone; namely, that the "hermitization" of students at Harvard is such a blissful respite from pain, suffering and self-destructive behavior that the College is granting me a service not providing activites.
Those noble enough to enjoy learning are content to spend their weekends reading or conversing with other intellectuals. I find Harvard overflowing with a-dionysian exploits, such as office hours with exceptional professors and literally inexhaustible libraries. But assume that I am alone in this belief; perhaps there exist students for whom books are not their sole comfort.
How can a student weaned from the teat of academia, perhaps pursuing a career in I-banking or consulting, be gratified with books alone? Obviously, "getting down" and "shaking one's booty" is priority one for individuals dismayed with the closing of final clubs!
Let the babies have their bottle. Kudos to those restricitng access and Dean Lewis. ANDREW W. HARTLAGE '02 FEB. 17, 1999
