Between partying and job searching, the task of ordering caps, gowns, invitations and other accessories can easily slip a senior's mind.
Many seniors said they are not aware that they must register to rent their caps and gowns on the third floor of the Coop during regular business hours before Sunday, April 12th.
After this date, a late charge will be leveled. Furthermore, seniors who fail to make rental reservations cannot participate in the commencement exercises.
Heather A. Gillingham '98 complained in an e-mail sent to her friends that "they never told us" about the Sunday deadline.
Peter Friedland '98 said, "Not only did nobody tell me that cap and gown fittings were required, but it wasn't until now that I had the faintest idea."
"I know that 90 percent of my friends are not aware of this responsibility," Friedland added.
House newsletters and a sign at the entrance of the Coop attempt to publicize the rental of caps and gowns.
However, seniors say information regarding deadlines, late fees and the like has not circulated enough.
Gown and hood rental is $22.50. If one is unable to attend commencement, a full refund will be given if the Coop is notified prior to June 3.
Gowns must be returned before June 15, unless the senior wishes to pay the full "retail value of the gown, up to $500," according to order forms.
Personalized graduation announcements are also available at the Coop or can be ordered through the Jostens Company by mail or telephone ((617)499-2170).
Delivery takes two to three weeks via UPS, and packages range from $50 to $84.
Jostens is also the vendor of class rings, which take eight weeks to deliver.
But even those who are aware of the rental stipulations say they have faced a trying experience at the Coop.
L. Elaine Chestney '98 said after waiting in a "rowdy throng" to report her height and weight in front of her classmates, she then had to get her skull circumference measured.
Mario J. Garcia-Serra '98 said, "This slow-moving process is justifiably aggravating to the ever-busy senior."
Further information about Commencement can be obtained from the Commencement Office in Wadsworth House or by telephone by 495-5726.
