Majority of House Residents Support Universal Access Plan

A majority of Eliot House residents support a universal access plan which would make the front door of the house accessible between noon and 8 p.m. to all Harvard ID card holders.

Over half of the 200 students who voted favor of the plan, according to an e-mail message sent to all Eliot residents by the House Committee yesterday afternoon.

Eliot is the only residential house whose masters have not approved the universal card key plan.

The e-mail message indicated that a door would be installed to prevent non-Eliot residents from entering H entryway via the dining hall.

A previous message sent by the House Committee had said that I and J entries, which provide access to the rest of the House from the front door, would be open only to Eliot residents.

The poll was conducted by e-mail and by tabling in the dining hall last week.

Ballots were due by 11 p.m. last Friday and the house committee tabulated the ballots over the weekend.

CAMBRIDGE POLICE

Acting Police Commisioner Walter Boyle Passes Away

Acting Cambridge Police Commissioner Walter Boyle was buried in a funeral ceremony earlier this month after suffering a fatal heart attack on February 3, according to a report in the Cambridge TAB.

Boyle, who died at 58, assumed the post late last year following the resignation of Perry L. Anderson. He was considered a leading candidate to succeed Anderson.

Superintendent Harold Murphy has replaced Boyle as acting commissioner.

Boyle began working for the Cambridge Police Department in the mid-1960s and served as superintendent under Anderson.

"He was great person," Cambridge Police Det. Frank Pasquarello said yesterday. "He was a good policeman, always wanting to help out and get involved."

Attorney General L. Scott Harshbarger '64, District Attorney Tom Reilly and Boston Police Chief Paul Evans attended Boyle's funeral, the TAB reported.
