Legendary folk singer Joan Baez will perform at Sanders Theatre on Monday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will run around two and one half hours, with one intermission.
Tickets, priced from $24.50 to $27.50, went on sale at noon on February 9. No student discounts will be available, said a representative from the Sanders Theatre ticket office. As of yesterday, 750 tickets have been sold, and only 75 remain.
Dar Williams, an up-and-coming folk singer, will open for Baez. Baez herself will be accompanied by a three-piece band.
The performance is sponsored by Great Northeast Productions, a concert promotion company based in Lexington.
Adam Lewis, an employee of Great Northeast Productions, said yesterday that his employer chose to hold the concert in Sanders Theatre because "it is a beautiful theatre and we thought the concert would be appropriate there."
Students interviewed yesterday seemed generally enthusiastic about the singer's upcoming performance but expressed little interest in attending the concert themselves.
"I don't know if I would go myself, but I think it's great that she's going to be performing here," said Shenkiat Lim '98.
But other students say they have never heard of the singer, who was popular in the 1960s and appeared at the first Woodstock festival.
"If I liked folk music and if I knew who Joan Baez was, I would be very excited about her coming here," said Daniel R. Garcia '97.
