Yale Deals Heartbreaking Overtime Loss to Sullivan and Co.

The Harvard men's basketball team fell to Yale last night in New Haven, 70-68, in overtime.

With 11.9 seconds left to play in the extra period and Harvard leading 68-67, Yale guard Jim Kawahito hit a short jump shot in the lane to give to put the Elis up for good. Crimson junior forward Mike Gilmore tried to retake the lead again with a driving layup seven seconds later, but it did not fall. Harvard  68 Yale  70

Harvard (4-19 overall, 2-9 Ivy) has now lost to Yale (9-14, 5-6) twice this season. The Elis came back from a 30-18 deficit to win 85-73 February 11 at Briggs Cage.

Kawahito's 14 points led the Bulldogs, which had four players score in double figures. Harvard sophomores Kyle Snowden and Chris Grancio paced the Crimson with 14, complemented by 13 from sophomore offguard Dave Demian.

Snowden and Yale center Dan Okonkwoo both had double-doubles, with Snowden pulling down 15 rebounds and Okonkwoo getting 12 points and 12 boards.

Poor shooting plagued both teams. In the first half, they combined for a terrible 21-55 from the floor (38.2 percent) and 2-15 from beyond the three-point arc. Nevertheless, the Elis were able to capture a surmountable 29-24 advantage at the break.

But after tying it at the end of regulation, 56-56, for the second time this year, Harvard could not win in overtime after making a comeback. Earlier, the Crimson lost to Princeton in double-overtime.

Harvard travels to Brown tonight. The team closes out the season next weekend with home games against Cornell and Columbia. YALE, 70-68 at Payne Whitney Gym Harvard  24  32  12  --  68 Yale  29  27  14  --  70
