5,335 to Receive Degrees Today

President Neil L. Rudenstine will confer 5,335 degrees on students graduating from the University this morning.

Morning exercise will feature the conferment of degrees, while after noon exercises will include an address by Vice President Al Gore '69.

One thousand, six hundred and twenty-three will graduate from the College, up slightly from last year's 1571, according to Associate Registrar Thurston A. Smith.

A total of 956 men and 667 women will pick up their baccalaureate degrees at their houses in afternoon ceremonies.

The total numbers of University graduates reflects a slight increase from last year's total of 5,266 degrees.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend today's ceremonies, although Gov. William F. Weld '66 will not be one of them, his scheduling office said yesterday. The governor of the commonwealth traditionally attends the exercises as an honored guests, and under the original University charter was a necessary attendee as the president of the Board of Overseers.

The crowd can expect mostly sunny weather with an expected high of 76 degrees.

All Harvard University police will be working maximum hours, said Chief Paul E. Johnson, and will be joined and state police officers.

The Secret Service will also provide a security detail because of Gore's visit. Security is expected to be tight.

As in part years, WHRB-FM, the student radio station, will broadcast the ceremonies, said Jeremy A. Rassen '95, the station's Commencement producer.

"We have our own announcers and broadcast team out at the steps of Widener," Rassen said. The radio station will also be providing translations of the Latin oration.

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences will be graduating 206 doctors of philosophy, 186 masters of arts, 33 masters of sciences and two masters of engineering for a total of 427 degrees. Students will receive diplomas inSanders Theater this afternoon.

The Law School will graduate 670 studentstoday, with diplomas awarded at Holmes field.

At the Longwood Avenue campus, the MedicalSchool will award diplomas in the Quadrangle to 89doctors of medicine and nine masters of medicalsciences, said Carol A. Duffy, registrar of theMedical School.

In the same ceremony, the Graduate School ofDental Medicine will present degrees to 36graduates in dentistry and medical sciences.

At the Graduate School of Design, 194 studentswill graduate today.

The School of Public Health will award a totalof 270 degrees, which include doctors of science,doctors of public health, masters of science andmasters of public health.

Across the river, the Business School will beinducting 797 new masters of businessadministration.

And the Divinity School will be granting 141degrees in divinity and theological studies.

The Graduate School of Education will beawarding 63 doctorates, 32 certificates ofadvanced study and 495 masters of education,according to Marion Crowley, administrativeassistant to the Dean of Education's office.

At the Kennedy School of Government, 489students will receive master's or doctoral degreesin public administration and public policy.Graduates will get their diplomas in John F.Kennedy Park.

Candidates who graduated in November or Marchare not included in the figures, through thosedegree holders are allowed to march in theCommencement procession
