Softball Sweeps St. Joe's

By Sean D. Wissman

Harvard's women's softball team earned an impressive two wins yesterday afternoon when it swept St. Joseph's of Maine, 10-9 and 9-1.

"I think we're pretty happy with the way the whole day went," senior Nicole Desharnais said. "There were a few scary moments, but we came through in the end. We won pretty convincingly."

Coming into the game, the Crimson (3-5, 14-24) was a bit wary of St. Joseph's. Despite the team's Division III status, word around softball circles was that it was a possible giant-beater.

That seemed to be the case early in the game, too.

In the first game, St Joseph's first four batters reached base and went on the score, giving the team a 4-0 lead after one.

But Harvard battled back. The Crimson scored nine runs in the next five innings to go up 9-4 in the sixth. St. Joseph's added two runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh, but Harvard scored another in the sixth to give it sufficient padding for the win.

"The game was really closer than the score," Desharnais said.

Elizabeth Walker got the win on the mound for the Crimson.

If the first game at least looked close, the second made no such pretensions.

The Crimson got out early in the game never looked back. Senior Christine Vogt nailed a two-run round-tripper in the fifth-inning put to seven-run rule into effect and lock up the win.

Rachel Salzman go the win on the mound.

Pacing the team in hitting in the game, and on the day, was freshman Melissa Kreuder. With her parents visiting her from Portland. Kreuder went an extraordinary seven for seven in the game.

Harvard will face Brown today.
