Harvard Profs Get Most Pay

The average salaries for full Harvard professors in 1993-94 will surpass those at all other American institutions, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Full professors at Harvard will earn an average of $100,900 this year, compared with the national average of $68,700 for full professors at all doctoral universities.

But in a faxed response to a list of questions, Dean of the Faculty Jeremy R. Knowles warned against a comparison of "apples and oranges."

"I think that the Chronicle numbers for faculty salaries are averaged over all the schools," he wrote. "Faculty at the Law School, Business School and Medical School, however, tend to earn more on average than professors in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS).

But Knowles acknowledged that the salaries of FAS professors meet or exceed those of their counterparts at other IvyLeague schools.

The national renown of many members of theCollege's faculty warrant those high salaries,according to Knowles. "Our faculty are of VERY[sic] high quality," he wrote.

Harvard's closest contender in faculty salarieswas Princeton, where the average professor willearn $96,300 this year. Brown fell to the bottomof the Ivy League salary ranking this year--fullprofessors there will earn an average of $75,200.

"We regard it as extremely, criticallyimportant to maintain competitive salaries inorder to maintain the kind of faculty we do," saidAssociate Dean for Finance Candace R. Corvey.

Faculty members at private universitiesnationwide will see their salaries rise by 3.5percent this year. That is up from last year's 2.5percent average increase--a jump so low that itlagged behind the rate of inflation.

In "real terms," salaries increases have beenstagnant nationally for the last four years, theChronicle reported. The newspaper predicted modestgrowth in salaries in future years as the nationemerges from the recession
