The Harvard Ballroom Dance Team won first place at a regional competition hosted by the club last weekend.

The eight-member Harvard A Team defeated 10 other competing colleges in both the American and International Style Team Matches, club president Juliet McMains '94 said Sunday.

"It didn't surprise me. The A team has some really talented people," said Jaime Hurtado '96.

Approximately 250 people attended the third annual Hanlon-Ford Winter Ball in Memorial Hall on Friday night, and 150 adult and college dancers competed individually and in teams on Saturday, McMains said.

Nationally renowned ballroom dancer Marguerite Hanson '42, a devoted supporter of the Harvard club, also attended the event.

In the American Style Team Match, which includes the waltz, tango, rhumba and swing, the Yale team came in second and the New York University team came in third, McMains said. In the International Style Team Match, which includes the waltz, quickstep, chacha and jive, Yale came in second and Cornell third.

Four Harvard couples placed first in their categories.

Alex Samuel '95 and McMains placed first in the International Standard Advanced Level. Mark Immel '94 and Harvard Law student Sarah E. Mitchell took first in the International Standard Syllabus.

Harvard Law student Hwan Quan Bu and Yale Law student Jennifer Gonzalez won the Advanced International Latin Dance Match. Jaime Hurtado '96 and Rebecca Milstein '95 took first place in the Fox Trot Beginner Level.
