PBHA Selects Pan as New President

The cabinet of Phillips Brooks House Association (PBHA) last night chose Vin Pan '95-'96 as the next president of Harvard's largest public service organization.

Pan, an economics concentrator and Currier House resident, has served since his first year on the Mission Hill After School Program, a PBHA committee that provides tutoring services for elementary school children.

The president of PBHA oversees approximately 1500 student volunteers and more than 40 public service committees. Pan said his task will be to coordinate the smooth operation of all aspects of the service organization.

"I'd say their responsibilities are working with the University administration, the student volunteers, the cabinet members, the board of directors and the PBH staff to ensure the quality of our service and to address the needs we see in the community," Pan said early this morning following the elections, which began at 6:30 p.m. last night.

Also elected to the PBHA Board of Directors for the next term were Vice President Eric D. Dawson '96, Treasurer Andrew Erlich '96, Secretary Scott McCue '96, Fundraisers Kristina Han '96 and Steven W. Hetts '96, and Programming Chairs Jennifer L. Oser '97 and Hahrie C. Han '97.

Current PBHA President John B. King '96-'95 said last night that about 50 cabinet members attended the first two PBHA election meetings, which are conducted by secret ballot and closed to campus press.

Dawson said last night that his primary responsibility as vice president would be to work closely with Phillips Brooks House staff and with the president.

"Traditionally, one of the largest and most important roles has been to work with the staff and to work with the president in addressing the needs of the organization," he said.

The new board comes to office at a turbulent time for PBHA.

PBHA leaders, including King, had opposed recommendations on public service included in the Report on the Structure of Harvard College. The report recommended that Dean of the Faculty Jeremy R. Knowles combine the College's current two-part public service structure under a single assistant dean for public service.

Knowles approved two of those recommendations last week, and two members of the new PBHA board will likely participate in the search for the new dean. The elections for the remaining members of the board of directors is scheduled for next Wednesday
