The upset-minded Harvard women's tennis team came up just short this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis coaches Association Eastern Regional Team Championships, losing, 4-0, in the semi-finals to eventual tournament champion William and Mary.

"We had a pretty good chance to win," junior co-captain Kelly Granat said. "We were a little disappointed, but William and Mary played really well."

The Crimson, which came into the 16-team tournament ranked 46th in the nation, breezed through the first two rounds before running into the 28th-ranked William and Mary squad.

William and Mary began the contest with a flurry, winning the first doubles and third doubles pro-sets to win the doubles team point.

At singles the depth of the William and Mary line-up proved too much for the netwomen.

The Tribe picked up points at third and sixth singles to build their lead to 3-0.

The clinching point for William and Mary came at second singles, where freshman Mylin Torres lost, 7-6(3), 6-0, to another freshman, Lauren Nikolaus. Nickolaus came into the match already ranked 70th nationally.

Torres put up a good fight throughout, leading 6-5, in the first set, then 3-1 in the ill-fated tie-breaker.

Torres also pushed numerous games in the second set to deuce but came up short race time.

"I though she was going to beat me badly," Torres said. "But I thought I played pretty competitively."

With William and Mary gaining an insurmountable 4-0 lead, the remaining matches were pulled off the court.

"There were some really close matches," Roiter said. "They just rose to the occasion."

The Crimson will get its chance for revenge in the spring when William and Mary makes a trip up to Cambridge for a dual match.

Harvard's route to the semi-finals of the weekend tournament, which was held at the University of Pennsylvania, went through Virginia Commonwealth in the first round and George Washington in the second round.

The Crimson took on 50th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth Friday, dominating them in a 4-0 victory.

Roiter and sophomore Rona Mayer teamed up to win at first doubles and the Crimson cliched the doubles point with a win at second doubles by freshman Gabriela Hricko and Granat.

Adding to the team points with singles wins were Gina Majmudar at first singles. Roiter at fourth singles and Granat at sixth singles.

In the second round, the netwomen disposed of George Washington by a 4-1 count. W&M  4 Harvard  0
