W. Soccer Second in League

The Ivy League standings are beginning to fall in place.

The Harvard women's soccer team has solidified its hold on second place in the Ivy League standings with a 1-0 victory over Penn on Saturday.

Harvard forward Emily Stauffer scored the sole goal in the win, and Crimson goaltender Phoebe Cummings kept the Quakers out of the net for the whole game.

"We had a tough game on astroturf against Penn but managed to pull it out," freshman Stauffer said. "Although we were the better team we didn't seem to gain control until the second half. Right now we're just concentrating on playing one game at a time."

Harvard's record is 2-0-1 in the Ivy League and 4-2-2 overall.

Besides the victory over the Quakers, the Crimson's only other Ivy League games were a 2-2 tie with Columbia and a 2-0 defeat of Cornell. Harvard's next game is against Yale this Saturday.

Meanwhile, in Providence, the Brown Bears have captured the lead in the Ivy League women's soccer standings with a 2-1 upset against Dartmouth this past weekend.

The Bears have garnered a league-record 11 titles since 1979, when the league first began crowning champions in the sport, and shared their most recent championship with Yale in 1992.

Brown also furnished the Ivy League's player of the week, junior Holly Hargroder, who scored the first goal of their win against the Big Green and was also noted for her dominance offensively. Hargroder is second on the team in both overall and Ivy scoring with seven and six points, respectively.

The Bears host Virginia on Sunday following an away game against Columbia on Saturday. The Lions are at Penn today and will host Buffalo on Sunday.

Around the rest of the Ivy League, Penn freshman Heather Herson scored the second goal of her collegiate career in a 5-2 loss to Temple and has two goals on nine shots this season.

For Cornell, Senior forward Michelle Ying scored two goals in the Big Red's 4-0 win against Columbia. Junior forward Lori Penny needs only three more goals to become the Red's second all-time leading scorer, with a career 25 goals. She is also only two goals short of the school record for goals in a season, which stands at 11.

Junior forward Amy Finkelstein is third all-time on Cornell's career assists list, counting on just three more to break the record of 17. The Red face fourth-ranked Hartford in a big non-league match this Sunday.

Dartmouth fared well against the Hawks earlier this week, tying them 1-1. Junior goalkeeper Heidi Hachtel made several key saves to preserve the tie. The Big Green will face Princeton in New Jersey on Saturday.

Speaking of the Tigers, Princeton defeated Yale 1-0 to even their overall record at 4-4 and better their entire 1993 winning total. Freshman goalkeeper Hallie Dinkelspiel won Ivy League rookie of the week honors with her 11 saves against the Bulldogs.
