M. Hoops Defeats Columbia

Tight 82-75 Victory

By Aimee C. Pease

It was a long bus ride home for the Columbia men's basketball team last night.

Reecally long.

The combination of a stunning 82-75 loss to Harvard, elimination from the race for the Ivy crown and the oh-so-great weather added up to quite a dismal night for the Lions.

But the Crimson, on the other hand, had a phenomenal night--it won. The upset victory was just Harvard's sixth of the year and ties last year's total.

Columbia's Buck Jenkins was a one-man team for the Lions--scoring 37 points. But no other Lion player scored more than 15. For Harvard, Captain Tyler Rullman knocked down 27 and senior center Arturo Llopis hauled in 13 rebounds.

Freshman Darren Rankin scored a spectacular 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting.

Harvard (6-19 overall, 3-10 Ivy) took command from the opening tip, opening up a 10-point first half lead at one point.

The only time the Crimson did not lead was the first few seconds of the second half, when the Lions led 38 37 before freshman Michael Gilmore put Harvard up to stay.

Columbia (15-10, 9-4) closed within two, 75-73, with 1:24 to play. HARVARD, 82-75 at Briggs Cage Columbia  33  42  --  75 Harvard  34  48  --  82
