The Harvard softball team swept a doubleheader yesterday against Stonehill College, 3-1 and 9-3, at North Easton, Mass.
Harvard (16-9 overall, 4-0 Ivy) started out slowly in both games, forcing it to play catch-up most of the afternoon. All of Stonehill's runs came in the first inning of each contest.
"We had difficulty adjusting to the pitching. We were simply not aggressive enough," Harvard Coach Barry Haskell said.
"I don't think that we played great but we did what we had to do," senior Liz Resnick said.
In the first game, Stonehill struck first, scoring a run in the first inning. Freshman Jennifer Kimble provided the Crimson with its first run in the second, hitting an RBI single which drove Resnick in from third.
Freshman Jana Meader collected the game-winning RBI in the sixth, scoring junior Chris Carr who walked and advanced to second on an error. Sophomore Ann Kennon pushed the lead to two later that inning.
Carr, the starting pitcher, was credited with the win. She pitched a complete game.
Stonehill exploded out of the blocks in the second game, scoring three runs on two hits and two errors in the first inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Second Game
"We started out totally flat [in the second game]. There was not much intensity," Carr said.
Harvard didn't remain flat for long, however, breaking the game open in the fourth.
The Crimson collected six base hits and six runs behind freshman Cheryl Sadow.
Sadow hit a 3-run double which gave the Crimson a 5-3 lead which it never relinquished.
The infielder went on to score later in the inning.
