The Boston Harbor clean-up and many Cambridge social programs have a good chance of getting funding from the Clinton administration's proposed "economic stimulus package," according to City Councillor Alice K. Wolf.
Wolf, in New Orleans this week with other Cambridge councillors for the National League of Cities (NLC) conference, said the proposed funding program will focus on new public transportation jobs, City Block Grant funds and summer youth employment programs.
"It was clear that projects that are 'ready to go,' creating jobs immediately, would get priority if a stimulus package is proposed," Wolf stated in a statement yesterday.
Members of the Clinton transition team who met with the NLC board would not confirm Clinton's commitment to the package, according to the statement. But Wolf said that city projects which have already been designed "should have a good shot at funding."
The NLC passed a resolution Saturday which urged the new administration to "begin to create a strong economic environment in which we can focus on long term investment in communities and in people."
The resolution also stated that Congress should "reorder federal spending policies" and begin to reduce the deficit, and that the NLC is willing to help the Clinton team in hammering out the specifics of the package.
