New Magazine Covers Environmental Issues

The first issue of the Environmental Reporter, a magazine devoted to covering environmental issues, will be distributed throughout the College early next week.

Members of the Cabot House Environmental Coalition and the Phillips Brooks House Association's Environmental Action Committee (EAC) have been assembling the magazine for three months, according to the editor, Roderick A. Scheer '93.

Scheer said the magazine, which will be published three times per year, will be news oriented, unlike some journals which concentrate on providing tips on protecting the environment.

Included in the first issue are articles on the planned damming of James Bay in Canada, the environmental consequences of the Gulf War and an interview with David Maybury-Lewis, a professor of anthropology at Harvard, Scheer said.

"We're putting it out so that people can see the diversity of environmental issues that are affecting the world today," said EAC member Kathy K. Perkins '92.

The magazine is fully funded by private donors and alumni and will be free of cost, Scheer said.

The Cabot environmental group, which was formed to produce the magazine, combined efforts with the EAC to publish the Environmental Reporter. The magazine will serve the dual purpose of a newsletter for the EAC, Scheer said.

"I'd hope that people, instead of throwing it away, would pass it around," said Scheer. "If everyone gives it a chance, they may learn something."
