Racquetwomen Batter Bruins in 8-1 Blowout

The Harvard women's squash team conquered Brown yesterday in a near shut out, nabbing eight of nine matches and 22 of 27 games for an 8-1 triumph at Hemenway Gymnasium.

"I was less concerned with how we won the match than with how we approached it," Harvard Coach Steve Piltch said. "Nearing the end of the season it's easy for them to let the game slide. But they didn't."

Tri-Captain and number-one seed Jenny Holleran let nothing slide--she dominated Brown's Marcy Carbonell in a 3-0 blanking.

"It was hard to keep the pressure on," said Holleran, who won easily, 15-10, 15-6, 15-12.

Stephanie Clark, playing at number two for Tri-Captain Sheila Morrissey, nabbed an easy 3-0 victory, as did junior Hope Nichols (18-15, 15-11, 15-6).

The perfect shutout record was nicked slightly when Tri-Captain Liz Reynolds lost one close game, 17-16, but Reynolds recovered to win the next three contests, 15-9, 15-5, 15-9.

Freshman Brooke Bailey wasn't quite in form, dropping three matches.

"My opponent was just better than me. That's all," said Bailey, who lost 15-8, 15-6, and 15-9.

"[Bailey] was a little flat in the first two games, and it was difficult for her to turn it on after that," Assistant Coach Ron Jacobs said.

Number-six seed Mary Greenhill dropped one game before capturing her match, but neither Daphne Onderdonk nor Martha Berkman saw a single loss.

"Brown is a strong team with depth," Reynolds said. "They kept us running. It was a good, competitive match before we play Yale on Saturday."

Harvard meets the Elis Saturday at Hemenway Gynmasium at 1 p.m. in a contest that should prove much more of a challenge for the Crimson.

"I expect we'll show up," Piltch said. "I expect it will be the best match of the year."
