The Harvard men's swimming team also began its season this weekend, but with mixed results.

After easily defeating Navy Friday in Annapolis, Md., the Crimson dropped a tough 57-56 decision to Columbia Saturday in New York.

"We should have won the meet," Co-Captain Ken Jonhson said. "We were ahead by 15 to 20 points. But we just didn't shut the door when we had to."

Harvard had four key opportunities to pick up the necessary points to defeat the Lions. But the Crimson was short on all four races--the 100, 200 and 500 freestyles, and the 200 breaststroke. All the events were decided by less than one second.

"There were so many places where we could have made the difference," Johnson said. "Instead of them beating us, we lost it."

Harvard, which fields a relatively young squad this year, hopes to bounce back tomorrow night when it hosts Brown at Blodgett Pool at 7 p.m.

"We learned that we can't take anyone for granted," Johnson said. "Every time you get on the blocks, it counts."
