Huskies Blank Big Red; Holy Cross Breezes

ITHACA, N.Y.--Dan Daponde threw a pair of touchdown passes as Northeastern broke from its runoriented wishbone offense to stun Cornell, 20-0, Saturday.

The sophomore quarterback connected with tight end Scott Adams on a 22-yd. touchdown pass in the first quarter and then hooked up with split end Jerey Sadberry on a 27-yd. scoring toss in the third period.

Sophomore kicker David Rusk added field goals of 25 and 35 yards as Northeastern won for the third time in four games. It was the second shutout for the Huskies, who blanked Rhode Island 17-0 last weekend after going 64 games without a shutout.

Cornell, which hadn't been shut out since losing to Brown, 22-0, midway through the 1985 season, slipped to 1-1 and lost a home season-opener for the third straight year.

Holy Cross 46, Princeton 0

WORCESTER--Tom Ciaccio passed for 343 yards and Dave Murphy intercepted two passes to become the Division I-AA career leader Saturday, powering Holy Cross to a 46-0 whipping of Princeton.

Ciaccio ran for two touchdowns and Joe Segreti ran for two more as the Crusaders, ranked fourth in I-AA, improved to 4-0 with their 12th straight win. Princeton, 1-1-1, suffered its most lopsided loss in eight years and its most one-sided shutout defeat ever.

Murphy's two thefts gave him 26 in his career, two more than Holy Cross' Bill McGovern and Isiaac Holt of Alcorn State.

Rhode Island 18, Brown 13

PROVIDENCE--Chris Poirier rushed for 190 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown as Rhode Island (2-2) rallied from a 13-0 deficit to beat Brown, 18-13, in a battle of Rhode Island's only Division I teams.

Brown's loss was its 12th straight. The Bears (0-3) have not won since a 16-12 victory over Columbia in November 1987.

Bucknell 36, Dartmouth 20

LEWISBURG, Pa.--Scott Auchenbach threw three second-half touchdown passes and Dan Scocca ran for a career-high 126 yards and a pair of scores as Bucknell downed Dartmouth, 36-20.

Bucknell (2-1) scored 22 unanswered second-half points after trailing, 20-14, at the half.

Lafayette 52, Columbia 14

EASTON, Pa.--Frank Bauer threw for 281 yards and four touchdowns, three to Mike Grau, as Lafayette handed the Lions their third loss of the season, 52-14.

Two of Bauer's touchdown passes came in the first five minutes of the game for Lafayette, which improved to 2-2.

Connecticut 31, Yale 20

NEW HAVEN--Connecticut quarterback Matt DeGennaro threw four interceptions, but the Huskies still pulled out a 31-20 triumph over Yale Saturday.

The Elis (2-1) opened the scoring with a 1-yd. run by Chris Kouri at the 11:27 mark of the first quarter. But UConn (3-1) answered with 31 straight points.
