The Harvard men's tennis team used day one of the ITCA Eastern Championships yesterday in Princeton, N.J., as a warmup for its anticipated Sunday title match against West Virginia. The ITCA's are the qualifiers for the nationals, which will be played in the winter.
The Crimson overwhelmed Boston College, 9-0, dropping only one set as it advanced to a second round matchup with Columbia this afternoon. Columbia topped Penn, 6-3, yesterday.
Leading the way for Harvard was Mike Shyjan, who combined with Mike Zimmerman to win first doubles, 6-3, 6-4, and then dominated Hiro Takata at second doubles later in the day, 6-0, 6-2.
Ironically, Zimmerman, listed 41st in the nations in the latest Volvo men's singles rankings, was the only Harvard player to drop a set, outlasting Gil Dailey at first singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Crimson, 9-0 at Princeton, N.J.
