Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
A Leverett House senior has not been seen since he left Harvard for winter break on Saturday, December 17.
Alexander J. Pak '88-'89 had planned to visit a friend at Boston University when he left, according to Jim E. Golen '89, one of Pak's roommates. But he never arrived, nor did he return home to Scarborough, Ontario.
Elizabeth B. Keeney, senior tutor of Leverett House, said Pak was reported missing to the Harvard University Police on Monday, December 19. The detectives handling the case were not available for comment yesterday.
Keeney and Leverett House Masters John and Judith Dowling described Pak's disappearance in the house newsletter on January 5. The announcement said Pak had used his credit card since the 17th.
Golen said that while Pak did take his toothbrush and some other personal belongings, he left enough in his room to indicate that he planned to return eventually.
He also said Pak was directing a production of Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple" that was scheduled for this weekend. The play has been postponed until spring, Golen added.
Assistant Senior Tutor Sharon A. McDade, who advises Leverett House's arts society, said Pak, a sociology concentrator, is active in theater "both seriously and playfully," and is considering a career in drama.
Senior Jeff Hass, who directed Pak in "Heaven Can Wait" this December, described Pak as very "laid back" and easy to get along with. "He seemed always to be in pretty good spirits," Hass said. "I would hope nothing bad happened to him."
Professor Dowling and Pak's parents declined to comment.
