Electric Door Hurts Dining Hall Worker

A dining services employee was injured last night when his hand became caught in an electric door in the Kirkland House basement.

At 7:30 p.m., Harvard University Police responded to a call that a man was caught in a "grinding machine" at 80 JFK St. Upon arrival, police found a Harvard employee with his hand caught in the side of an electric garage door.

It took a fire department rescue team about 10 minutes to free the man's hand from the door of the trash compacting room. Police also brought a bolt cutter to the scene to help with the rescue effort.

The man was taken by ambulance to Mount Auburn Hospital. An emergency room spokesperson said she did not expect the man would have to be admitted. "He's doing fine," she said.

Police, fire and hospital officials declined to give the man's name.
