After two decisive victories earlier in the week, the Harvard women's field hockey team fell, 2-1, to a powerful Connecticut squad yesterday at Soldiers Field.
The stickwomen found themselves on the defensive from the start after UConn Captain Diana Madl scored a goal only three minutes into the contest.
The shot came off the last short corner in a series of three. Many Crimson defensive players insisted afterward that three Huskies players were off sides at the time.
Moments later, junior Char Joslin, the team's leading scorer, twisted her ankle and was forced to leave the game. It is not clear how serious Joslin's injury is.
Harvard (3-2) picked up the pace during the rest of the first half, running with the Huskies. But the Crimson was unable to make the necessary connections on attack that could have provided more scoring opportunities.
UConn had some good scoring chances in the first half, and Co-Captain goaltender Denise Katsias had to make some good saves to keep the Huskies from extending their lead.
At one point, Crimson sweeper Lynn Frangione made a great save off a powerful Huskies corner shot.
UConn scored again early in the second half off a short corner blast from the top of the circle by Dara Fuchs.
Eight minutes later, the Crimson struck back. Junior link Sharon Landau scored off a rebound from a shot by freshman Sandra White.
With 20 minutes left in the game, Harvard was unable to generate offense, due to its inability to control the attack.
