Julie Rice Named Asst. SID

By Colin F. Boyle

After working as a full-time graduate intern the past year in the Dartmouth Sports Information Office, Julie Rice was named Harvard Assistant Sports Information Director, Director of Athletics John P. Reardon '60 announced this week.

The Geneva, New York native--who joins Harvard Sports Information Director Frank Cicero and fellow Assistant SID Jeff Bradley on the sports publicity staff--will cover all Harvard teams, but Cicero said he expects she will concentrate on the men's and women's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, football and field hockey teams.

"She's a good writer, but her character and personality really made her stand out in the interview," Cicero. "She has charisma that makes her a little bit special. Everyone we talked to about Julie indicated that she is much better than your average person."

For the past year, Rice handled publicity for the Big Green men's and women's ice hockey, field hockey and men's lacrosse teams as well as writing feature stories for other Dartmouth squads. The Dartmouth Football Program--which contained many of her stories--was selected second-best among I-AA schools by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

"She was involved in the entire operation of the office, from brochures to feature stories to statistics," said Dartmouth SID Kathy Slattery. "Julie is a very thorough worker. She's very attentive to detail, but at the same time she has a nice creative edge, too."

Not Just Flunkeys

Although Rice is not the first woman to hold the position of assistant SID at Harvard, Cicero said it was the first time that a second assistant position was used at the little-known, but invaluable office responsible for promoting and publicizing Harvard sports.
