Library Evacuated After Scare

Bomb Threat Shuts Down Law Library for Two Hours

By Adam K. Goodheart

The Harvard Law Library was evacuated for two hours last night after a man telephoned the circulation desk with a bomb threat, officials said.

A man with a German accent called at about 7:30 p.m. and said there was a bomb in the pedestrian tunnel between Langdell Library and the International Legal Studies Library that would "turn Langdell into a crematorium," according to Sergeant Peter O'Hare of the Harvard police. The man did not identify himself, O'Hare said.

Dean of the Law School James Vorenberg '49 said a search of the library by Cambridge police bomb experts turned up nothing.

No Suspect

Cambridge fire officials, as well as Harvard and Cambridge police, were called to the library immediately after the threat and recommended that the entire complex be closed for two hours, said Vorenberg, who was also called to the scene.

The library reopened at 9:30 p.m.

Vorenberg said that although there are no suspects in the bomb scare, he expects police to investigate fully.

The evacuation caused more annoyance than fear among Law School students using the library to study for exams.

Student Delays

"I've been waiting to get in and get my books for an hour," said law student Emmanuel Okonkwo. "I went out to eat, and when I came back, I couldn't get in."
