Icewomen Ice Two in Maine

The Harvard women's hockey team notched a pair of shutouts in Maine this weekend, defeating Colby College, 5-0, on Saturday and over-coming Bowdoin College, 7-0, yesterday.

Although the Crimson (5-2 overall, 2-0 Ivy) did not allow a single goal the entire weekend, the squad felt it played much better against Bowdoin.

"We played much better [yesterday]," tri-Captain Brita Lind said. "I was displeased with the way I played Saturday, so I wanted to try to redeem myself."

Martina Albright led the scoring for Harvard against Colby with two goals. Beverly Stickles, freshman Sandra Whyte, and Lind also scored.

The Crimson netminders only faced 17 shots the entire contest. Tri-Captain Jennifer White made all 17 saves in two-and-a-half periods before being relieved by Gillian D'Souza. D'Souza, who came in for the last half of the third period, did not have to stop a single shot.

In comparison, the Colby goaltender faced a barrage of 49 shots on goal.

"The score would have been much higher if it was not for her play," Harvard Assistant Coach Julie Sasner said.

Despite the lopsided score, however, neither the coaches nor the players felt that this was one of the team's better games.

"We just seemed really slow, and our passing was off," Whyte said.

"We weren't that pleased overall with our performance in this game," Sasner said. "We were kind of sluggish."

The next morning, however, the Crimson more than redeemed itself with its resounding victory over Bowdoin. Harvard racked up four goals in the first period to set the tone for the rest of the game. Lind tallied two of the goals, with help from Ginny Simonds and Whyte. Trotman and Albright also added scores in the first frame.

Whyte, the freshman standout, continued her stellar play. She notched a hat trick in last week's contest against the University of New Hampshire. Sunday, she added two assists in the first period and an unassisted goal in the third.

Char Joslin scored the only goal of the second period with only fifteen seconds elapsed, with an assist by Trotman. Goals by Whyte and Sue Cullinane closed out the scoring for the Crimson.

Netminder

Jen White, better known for her sparkling play in the net, singlehandedly outscored Bowdoin. The first-team All-Ivy goalie tallied the first point of her career with an assist on Trotman's short-handed goal in the first period. After Bowdoin had cleared the puck out of its end, White came out to retrieve it and passed it to Whyte. Whyte then skated up the rink and dished the puck off to Trotman, who sent it in for the score.

"Jen is such an important part of the team," Trotman said. "We're really excited that she scored a point."
