The Harvard golf team tied for eighth place in the ECAC Regional Qualifying Tournament Thursday at the Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono, Maine.
The top three finishers of the 20-team tournament, the University of Maine, Salem St., and Dartmouth, and the 10 best individual scorers advanced to the ECAC finals next weekend in Hershey, Pa.
Harvard Captain Terry Murray qualified for the individual competition by placing second overall, shooting a 75 on the par 72 course.
Adding to the Crimson cause was sophomore Mike Foster, who shot an 81, freshmen Bill Boone (87) and David Miller (88), and senior Murray Grundy, who shot a 95.
The tournament was plagued with miserable weather as high winds, frigid temperatures and rain forced most of the golfers to play in heavy sweaters and ski caps.
The squad will cap off the fall season in the 45-team New England tournament to be held at New Seabury, Ma., next Tuesday and Wednesday.
