One of Harvard's president East Asian scholars has received another prestigious honor.
University Professor Emeritus Edwin O. Reinchader will lend his name to a new center for Far East Studies, created at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.
As a former ambassador to Japan and noted Far Fast expert Reischauer has long advocated more study of Japanese and other foreign cultures to improve diplomatic understanding.
As U.S. ambassador to Japan from 1961-1966, Reischauer was the first American ambassador to speak Japanese and he is widely hailed for improving relations, especially cultural with large segments of that country's society.
Johns Hopkins officials said the Reischauer center would be established under a $5 million endowment and would have the specific goal of training diplomats and policy makers by teaching them history, language economics, and politics of Japan and several other Southeast Asian nations.
