W. Harriers Sweep Race; Men Split

Despite fighting stuffy weather conditions, the Harvard men's and women's cross country teams ran intense races Saturday afternoon in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

The trackwomen swept past Brown, 15-50, Northeastern, 15-49, and Drake, 29-30. Sophomore Suzanne Jones was the Crimson's first runner to finish, placing third overall. Part of Harvard's success came from its ability to run together as a pack.

"It was a good team effort, and a very close meet," said Jones. "Everyone was in a pack during the second mile helping each other out."

Amber Duncan, Rose Schneider and Jenny Shank finished eighth, ninth and 10th overall, respectively. Although Drake had the top two finishers, the pack of Crimson runners helped keep Harvard's score down.

The men, on the other hand, returned from Rhode Island with split results. The Crimson defeated Rice, 22-37, and Drake, 17-42, but fell to Northeastern, 32-23, and Brown, 37-19. Harvard was handicapped by the absence of several of its top runners, including senior Brian Cann.

"Northeastern and Brown fielded their strongest teams," said Tim Harte. "We can definitely beat them in meets to come."

For the second consecutive weekend, Ted Ullyot led the Crimson runners to the finish line. He was followed by Jon Lewis, Tim Harte, and Hans Weber. The harriers started together as a pack, but separated near the end of the race.

"After a mile and a half, we realized that the race was really with Northeastern," said Lewis. "Brown was too far ahead and Rice and Drake were too far behind."

The trackmen next compete in the Greater Boston Championships Friday.
