PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--Malcolm Glover threw a 28-yd. touchdown pass to Dave Whaley, and Jerry Meyer recovered two fumbles to thwart Yale Saturday as Penn (4-0 Ivy, 6-0 overall) posted a 10-3 victory at Franklin Field.
Meyer recovered fumbles at the Penn 5-yd. line in the third quarter and at the Quakers' 32 in the fourth. and Tom Charters picked off a Mark Brubaker pass at the Penn 29 with 1:11 left to play.
Yale (1-1-1, 1-4-1) had one last chance, but time expired after the Elis moved to the Penn 27.
Glover, who completed 12 of 25 passes for 165 yards, capped off an 80-yd., 12-play drive with his 28-yd. pass to Whaley on a fourth-down play.
Yale's only score of the game occurred with 3:09 left in the third quarter. The Elis blocked Penn punter Dave Amodio's kick and drove down to the Penn eight. Scott Walters nailed a 31-yd. field goal.
The Quakers had an 85-yd. interception return for a touchdown by Steve Johnson negated by a clipping penalty as the first half expired.
Cornell 24, Dartmouth 7
HANOVER, N.H.--Cornell fullback Scott Malaga carried the ball 34 times for 117 yards as Cornell defeated Dartmouth, 24-7, Saturday at Memorial Field.
With the win, the Big Red (3-1, 4-2) stayed a half-game behind undefeated Penn in the Ivy standings. The Big Green fell to 1-2 in the league, 2-4 overall.
Despite Dartmouth quarterback Mark Johnson's 53 passing attempts, the Big Red still managed to slow down the Big Green passing attack. Johnson finished the day with 269 yards in the air.
The Red, after a slow start by both teams in the first quarter, scored on four consecutive possessions in the second and third quarters.
Cornell quarterback Aaron Sumida (14 attempts, nine completions, 193 yard) connected with Frank Monago for a 40-yd. score that gave the Red a 17-0 lead.
Dartmouth closed to within 10 on a 4-yd. pass from Johnson to Chris Keck in the third quarter.
But Cornell came right back when fullback Steve Lutz, with the help of the option pass, threw a 23-yd. touchdown pass to Sean MacAuley.
Holy Cross 35, Brown 14
PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Brown continued its search for its first victory of the season Saturday against Holy Cross.
The Bruins are still looking.
Sparked by fullback Joe Segretti's 150-yd., four-touchdown performance, Holy Cross easily defeated Brown, 35-14. Brown (0-3-1, 0-5-1) is the only Ivy League team not to win a game this season.
Brown quarterback Danny Clark was injured on the second offensive play for the Bruins. Substitute Dan Rukamp threw for only 62 yards in the game.
The Crusaders cruised to a 29-0 lead with four runs by Segretti and a safety. It was the second straight week that Segretti has scored four times.
Darrin Darrington sacked Rukamp in the first quarter on a third-and-eight situation deep in Bruin territory.
Holy Cross quarterback Jeff Wiley completed 16 of 26 passes for 171 yards.
Holy Cross scored its last touchdown of the game when Viv Washington recovered a fumbled pass completion in the end zone.
Brown's only offensive touchdown of the game--and its first score in 11 quarters--came in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by Nick Badalato. The Bruins scored again on blocked punt recovery by Matt Malbandian.
