Two new head coaches have been named to the Harvard sports staff in the past week, filling the vacancies left by departing women's soccer and men's lacrosse Coach Bob Scalise.
Tim Wheaton, assistant to Scalise in both the women's soccer and men's lacrosse programs for the past two years, has been named the head coach of the women's soccer team.
An '83 graduate of Drew University, Wheaton has been active in several youth soccer programs, in addition to holding duties at Harvard. Wheaton coached the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association girls-under-16 team and assisted in the U.S. Soccer Federation Region One girls program. He plans to continue in his capacity as assistant lacrosse coach next spring.
The women's soccer team finished last season with an 8-3-3 record under the direction of Scalise, who will attend Harvard Business School next fall.
Men's Lacrosse
Director of Athletic Operations Scott Anderson will take over the men's lacrosse program next season, while continuing his current duties in the athletic department.
A former All-Ivy selection in lacrosse, Anderson captained the Big Green during his senior year at Dartmouth.
Anderson became an assistant under Scalise in 1978, after completing four seasons on the Cornell men's lacrosse staff.
This spring the Crimson (10-4 overall) finished the lacrosse season ranked 15th nationally.
Goodbye
Scalise ends his coaching career with a 113-38-11 record in soccer and a 98-79 record in lacrosse. His 113 soccer victories leads all active Ivy League coaches and his lacrosse win total is second in the league behind Cornell's Richie Moran.
