Florida Knocks Off Netwomen In First Round of NCAAs, 8-1

Top-seeded Florida eliminated the Harvard women's tennis team from the NCAA Tournament yesterday afternoon at UCLA, 8-1.

The Crimson was knocked off in the first round of the sixteen-team tournament for the second year in a row. Last year, Stanford flew to the national title after taking Harvard, 8-1, in the opening round.

The Crimson's only winner was freshman Cristina Dragomirescu who topped Seminole Nicole Polasek, 6-3, 7-5, at number five singles.

The Crimson finished the spring at 12-6 and 14-7 overall. The Ivy Champion netwomen were undefeated in the Ivy League.

At first singles Shaun Stafford defeated Kathy Vigna, 6-3, 6-3. At number two, senior Robin Boss fell 6-1, 6-1, to Jill Hetherington.

Seminole Tammy Whittington beat Kristin Bland in third singles 6-0, 6-3.

The Crimson's Cindy Austrian pushed Denise Dayan at number four, but she fell, 6-3, 7-6. Dragomirescu won at five, and in the closest match of the afternoon, Florida's Cathy Goodrich topped Kathy Mulvehal, 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.

The Seminoles swept in doubles. Hetherington and Goodrich beat Boss and Bland at number one, 6-4, 6-1.

At Second doubles, it was Stafford and Polasek over Vigna and Austrian, 6-3, 7-6 and in the final match of the day Wittington and Siobhan Nicholson topped Dragomirescu and Mulvehal.
