For the doubles team of Kristin Bland and Jamie Henikoff, it was one win after another this weekend. And their final win--which crowned them champions of the Rolex ITCA Northeast Regional Championships yesterday--is taking them places. All the way to Minnesota.
The pair's 6-4, 6-3 win over a Rutgers team at the ITCA tourney hosted by the University of Pennsylvania this weekend qualified them for the Indoor National Tournament in Minnesota in early February.
The ITCA tourney brings together all "the best kids in the East," said tournament chairman Cissie Leary.
Invitations to this elite individual tournament are sent to the top players from 28 schools along the East coast, from NewEngland through Virginia. Six Crimson players--themost from any school--were invited to Penn for thetournament.
Harvard singles players were Tri-Captain KathyMulvehal, Christina Dragomirescu, Jackie Farrell,as well as Bland and Henikoff. Mulvehal,Dragomirescu, Farrell and Bland were defeatedearly on in the tourney.
Farrell lost to her Yale opponent in the thirdround, 6-3, 6-2. A William & Mary player toppledBland in the third round, 6-2, 6-3. Mulvehal had aterrible draw and lost to the number-one seed fromthe University of Maryland in the first round.
Henikoff, who teamed with Bland to win thedoubles championship, played superbly, going asfar as the singles quarterfinals.
The only other Harvard player in thetournament, freshman Amy Delon, played doubleswith Dragomirescu. After coming back from threematch points, the duo lost in a three-set decisionto a UVA team in the first round
