NEW YORK -- Curt Young beat Ron Guidry in a duel of left-handers, as Oakland scored the winning run in the ninth inning on an error by New York center fielder Rickey Henderson to defeat the Yankees, 2-1, Tuesday night.

Young went 8 1-3 innings, allowing four hits, walking one, and striking out three in raising his mark to 2-0 on the season. He retired 18 straight batters at one stretch. Jay Howell got the final two outs to record his fifth save.

Guidry (now 4-3) gave up five hits, walked three, and struck out seven.
