Freshman Jeff Bloom should have known better. The Tufts lefthander was silly enough to let the Harvard baseball team get two hits off him in yesterday's opener.
One of them was a second-inning Elliott Rivera home run, and the Crimson won, 1-0.
"As soon as the home run was there, I felt the game was over," said senior Jeff Musselman, whose three-hitter wilted Bloom's Jumbos. "I knew I wasn't giving up a run," added Musselman (4-1), who struck out nine while walking none.
Chris Marchok (3-1) threw a five-hit shutout in the nightcap, as Harvard won its sixth straight game, 6-0. The Crimson is now 12-6 overall, 5-0 in the Greater Boston League. No league opponent has scored against Harvard.
Tufts dropped to 5-5 overall, 0-3 in league play.
Harvard's pitchers are streaking. In their last three starts, Mussclman has yielded just eight hits, Marchok just 11.
"Our kids are throwing really well," Crimson Coach Ales Nahigian said. "Jeff was awesome again."
Musselman rarely got behind on the count. "I got my first pitch in for a strike about 80 percent of the time," he said. "That was the whole key to the game. I just got right on top of them right away."
Musselman's shutout was never in danger, as only one Tufts runner reached second base. Marchok gave up two straight hits with one out in the sixth, but stranded the runners by fanning Angelo Chaclas and Bill Carroll to retire the side.
Both Harvard pinchers got ample help form their defense, as double plays eliminated three of the 10 Jumbo players to reach base safely.
In the nightcap, designated hitter Jim DePalo doubled home Tony DiCesare for the game-winning run in the first inning. Left fielder Jay McNamara provided most of the day's offense with a three-run shot just left of the right-field foul pole-For McNamara who starts in left against right-handed it was his second home run in as many games.
THE NOTEBOOK: Rivera's seven-game hitting streak ended when he went were for three in the night-cap...Musselman has 35 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched, 34 of them in his last 26 innings, Marchok has fanned 20 in 17 inning...Yesterday's opener was the closest game of the year, with the Crimson's two-run victory at UMass the second closest contest...Harvard hosts Holy Cross tomorrow at 3 p.m. Game-Winning RBI-Rivera, DP-Tufts 1.
