Edge Tops Tournament; Squash Bashes Bowdoin

The Harvard women's squash team had a very successful weekend, as the Crimson's top three players participated in a tournament at Princeton while the rest of the squad (now 2-0) destroyed Bowdoin, 8-1.

Diana Edge, Ingrid Boyum, and Marti Winnick made up the Harvard trio that journeyed to New Jersey. Edge won the tourney's title with a 3-0 defeat of Trinity's Eli Pearce.

Harvard's number one seed, Edge swept through a draw composed of the nation's top 16 players without losing a game.

Boyum beat Trinity's best--Sophie Porter--by the score of 3-0, but lost to Pearce (Trinity's number two) in the semi-finals, 3-1.

"I was definitely pleased with the result," Edge said, "but it's hard to know what it means since it's just the beginning of the season and the tournaments aren't until February.

"But it was a good start for the season," she added.

Boyum finished third in the competition, followed by Porter, Demer Holleran of Princeton, and Phoebe Trubowitz of Yale.

"I'm very pleased with both Diana and Ingrid," Crimson Coach Priscilla Choate said. "They both played well."

Teamwork

At Bowdoin, the surprise for Harvard was that regular number four Lucy Miller--pressed into service at number one because of her teammates' absence--played Bowdoin's top player to the wire before losing, 3-2.

The rest of the racquetwomen won their matches in straight sets as Harvard emerged with an 8-1 triumph.

"I was pleased that we could win very decisively without our top three players," Assistant Coach Jack Barnaby said.

The squad will barely have time to catch its breath before it hosts Trinity today at Hemenway Gymnasium. "We're hoping to play very well," Choate said. "The team is up for the match and both teams are equally tough, and we will give it 100 percent."
